Last month at Objectspace, Tāmaki Makaurau-based architecture cooperative Groupwork announced the launch of its pre:fab school’s two-month programme. We asked the team behind the new ‘school’, Tessa Forde, Leonard Hobbins, Ollie Brockie and Simon Glaister, how it will work.

pre:fab pre:School is an 8-week architecture school that will test what is possible for future alternatives to design and education in the built environment through hands-on learning and theory of practice,” says Glaister. “It’s a course designed for students, graduates, practitioners and all those interested in advancing the theory, significance and material development of our shared environments.”

The course is designed to be accessible around full-time work or study and will take place one to two weeknights a week and on weekends across various sites in Tāmaki Makaurau.

Following the Objectspace launch event on 16 April, the team has released the full programme on its website, opened for enrolment, and has filled 11 places. A pilot programme for the new architecture school is scheduled to run this winter from June 13 to August 8.

Glaister says those showing interest in the programme are a diverse group. “Whether you are a student looking for more hands on experience with natural materials, real world construction projects, or introductory support in theorising your practice, a grad wanting to build a more diverse portfolio and connect to the feeling of ‘school’ again, a practicing architect looking for the same, or to help build a more effective and creative discipline for intergenerational conviviality, a Principal or Director hoping to trade knowledge and experience for youthful energy and the power of naïveté, or a non-architect wanting to connect to an enigmatic profession and learn more about natural building, pre:fab school is designed to fit in around work, study and life.”

For more information, see the pre:fab website or enrol here. Spaces are limited and offered on a first come, first served basis. Student, unwaged and graduate rates are offered. Questions can be sent to School@prefab.xyz
