The NZIA’s APL Architects Design Series is traditionally comprised of three winners from the New Zealand Architecture Awards; however, thanks to the change of programme in 2015, winners are yet to be announced.

To fill the gap, the NZIA has invited two highly accomplished architects, Megan Edwards and Malcolm Walker, both of whom were shortlisted in the new ‘additions and alterations’ housing category of the New Zealand Architecture Awards, to discuss the ways they approach their work.

2015’s Design Series will also examine multi-unit housing, a subject of ever-increasing importance in our cities and towns. Architectus and Athfield Architects will present their respective works at Wynyard Quarter.

Inspiring Housing Alterations: Malcolm Walker - Malcolm Walker Architects
Malcolm’s talk, ‘Renovation, Indignation, Revisionism and Nimbyism’, will include a review of some projects, including the enigmatically named Sod the Villa, and will look at why and how they were made - and what happened.

Inspiring Housing Alterations - Megan Edwards
Megan will present some of her latest works and provide insights into the way her practice approaches the design process with specific regard to alteration projects.

Wynyard Central by Architectus
Severin Soder will provide insights into Architectus’ masterplanning, development and design approach. Severin has, respectively, been involved in this project for more than 10 years.

132 Halsley Street by Athfield Architects
Athfields Architects will discuss 132 Halsey, a development of 53 high-quality residences on the water’s edge of the Wynyard masterplan. 132 Halsey features a mix of dwelling types that have been carefully arranged to relate well to public space while addressing challenging site and environmental conditions. The presentation will explain the development of the design, the progression of the practice’s thinking from Clyde Quay Wharf, in Wellington, and the process of negotiating the physical, economic and social contexts of the project. Presenters from Athfields will be announced soon!
