NZILA Te-Tau-a-Naku workshop
The NZILA, Te-Tau-a-Nuku (the Māori Landscape Architects’ Ropu) and Firth present three one-day workshops across New Zealand in September and October that will focus on the issues, techniques and mechanics of engaging with kaupapa Maori in the landscape.
Most of Aotearoa/New Zealand’s landscapes are culturally shared. They are public places and they ought to speak to more than just the Pakeha majority; they ought to address, respond to and find inspiration in the Māori world. By and large, however, most landscapes in the public realm only speak English.
This Wānanga addresses this issue. It is focused on the shared environments that are of concern to all designers: the public squares, plazas, parks and streets, the design of communities, and the planning of infrastructure which is the focus of most designers’ work and which in today’s Aotearoa/New Zealand have to speak Maori as well as Pakeha.
The Wānanga will be offered in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch (Tamaki, Poneke and Otautahi), in versions tuned to these localities by venue and case studies, and tribal context and frame, and will be structured around the following presentations and workshop discussions:
- the problem, the opportunity and the benefit of solving it
- the local tribal structure and politics, how to engage and modes of connection
- the culturally shared landscape, the design drivers to successful design
- case studies drawn from the scales of planning, wide scale design and the site
Marae based, the Wānanga includes lunch, morning and afternoon tea. Those attending will be given a copy of the key presentations, and a kit of digital resources including a glossary of key words, explanation and guide to the powhiri and reference material.
Registration is now open.
