Le Corbusier and Colour in Architecture
Le Corbusier devised his own ‘architectural polychromie’ – a series of colours based on the harmonious use of nature.
Rachel Lacy from D’Arcy Polychrome (who is producing Les Couleurs® Le Corbusier Colour Range by Les Couleurs Suisse AG) discusses Le Corbusier’s ‘architectural polychromie’ colours as part of Auckland Architecture Week.
Le Corbusier’s life was as intense as his architecture is influential; his career as vivid as his work, and colour was one of his consuming interests.
“Man [and, surely, women too] needs colours to live,” he wrote. “It is an element as necessary as water and fire.” Le Corbusier designed 75 buildings in a dozen countries, but also devised his own ‘architectural polychromie’ – a series of colours based on the harmonious use of nature.
At this presentation (5pm, 27 September), Lacy will discuss what it is, exactly, that makes these Corbusier colours so special.
