Kermadec: Nine artists in the South Pacific
Kermadec showcases a diverse collection of artworks from nine leading South Pacific artists inspired by their voyage to the Kermadec region of New Zealand in May 2011. Based on Raoul, one of fifteen islands in the region, they explored and imagined the Polynesian voyagers, adventurers and scientists who had traversed this remote region before them. Each artist found their own “Kermadec voice”, and in their respective mediums they have created an extraordinary story and exhibition.
Gregory O’Brien, one of the artists on the voyage says: unlike Antarctica and New Zealand’s subantarctic islands, the Kermadec Islands haven’t figured in our country’s visual art and they hardly feature in our literature. That said, I’m certain the forthcoming ‘Kermadec’ exhibition will change all that.
Artists who feature in the exhibition include: Phil Dadson, Bruce Foster, Fiona Hall, Gregory O’Brien, Jason O’Hara, John Pule, John Reynolds, Elizabeth Thomson and Robin White.
