Black in Fashion
From the all black uniforms of our sports teams to that icon of Kiwiana, the black singlet, black is the colour most commonly associated with New Zealand identity. Playing on the words and concept of all black and linking that to the place of black in New Zealand’s fashion (historical and contemporary) and cultural heritage, Black in Fashion will get to the heart of this blackness.
Curated by the New Zealand Fashion Museum, the free exhibit incorporates a diverse array of 70 garments and accessries, which are organised across a number of themes: authority, icon, Kiwiana, music and fashion from the early 1900s. There will also be a series of evening and weekend events during the exhibition where guest speakers will explore, debate and entertain on the theme of black as part of the New Zealand identity.
