Colourful schools, coastal houses, education centres and more feature in the 29 shortlisted projects for this year’s combined Waikato/Bay of Plenty local awards, run by the local branch of Te Kāhui Whaihanga New Zealand Institute of Architects (NZIA).
The programme’s jury for 2020 was led by Tauranga architect John Henderson, who selected the finalists along with architects Fraser Cameron (Taupo) and Sharon Jansen (Wellington), and Alice Hutchison, Director of Tauranga Art Gallery.
“The shortlist includes outstanding examples of the wide range of buildings that architects design, from schools, offices and public buildings to houses and baches,” Henderson said.

The NZIA has noted that the COVID-19 lockdown has halted the usual jury visits to shortlisted projects. “Resumption of the visits or the adoption of alternative means of deciding award-winners are dependent on the national measures adopted to combat the COVID-19 pandemic,” the organisation says.
The NZIA Architecture Awards programme is supported by Resene.
