Up all night: 24-Hour Design Competition
Over 100 students competed in this year’s 24-Hour Student Design Competition, organised by the Student Architecture Network of New Zealand (SANNZ).
The event was held at Unitec’s campus this year, but all of the architecture schools across New Zealand alternate hosting it.
Team worked through the night to create a 3-minute presentation about the designs.
Students came from of the schools across the country including the Ara Institute of Canterbury and Otago Polytechnic.
Teams’ presentations were nothing short of entertaining, with one team giving judges tin space hats to don.
The winning design consisted of moveable pods which housed elements of Earth, to create a mobile living environment.

The first place team consisted of Brianna Butler-Gallie, Maddison Hargreaves, Victor Yu, Rimo Ribechini, Narelle McAllum, Abigail Spence.
The second place team was made up of Matt Connolly, Kelly Thomas-Raela, Bonnie Chen, Chutikan Treewattana Suwan, Nicole Dealey.
A team made up of Darrach Day, Nor Sabrina, Geonhee Park, Lei Chan, Garla Carter took home the third place spot.
In July, over 100 architecture students from around the country gathered to stay up all night for the Student Architecture Network of New Zealand’s (SANNZ) 24-Hour Design Competition. Sixteen teams were given a brief on Friday 26 July and worked through the night, giving a crit to a panel of judges on the evening of Saturday 27 July.
This year, students were asked to imagine a world where the moon had been colonised following the landing by Neil Armstrong in 1969. To honour the 50th anniversary of that landing, teams designed a moon base. Each time was also allocated a different programme – think, tourist hubs, Vegas-style casinos and mining colonies – and specific style requirements like comic book, utopian and no straight lines.
The jury included University of Auckland faculty Dr Dorita Hannah, AUT professor Dr Fleur Palmer, Architecture New Zealand editor and University of Auckland lecturer Chris Barton and Auckland-based architect Dominic Glamuzina.
Judges, students and supporters gathered at the Bluestone Room to watch the teams’ 3-minute presentations. As students are often an imaginative bunch, projects and presentations varied in style but were, at the very least, entertaining. Many groups drew on the “space race” culture of the 1970’s and presented retro aesthetics, and some used a more futuristic lens. One team gifted each of the judges with tin foil space helmets to don.
The winning team was given a “moving cities” programme and designed arthropod-like structures that allowed colonies on the moon to be mobile.
Event organisers from SANNZ noted, “It was great to see students from all universities around New Zealand socializing and making some core networks and mates with new people, especially with the inclusion of Ara Institute and Otago Polytechnic this year.”
The competition is always a great way for students at all levels to network and learn from each other, and each year, there is an impressive show of innovation and creativity – fuelled by copious amounts of coffee. University of Auckland first year architecture student Angela Wong participated in this year’s event and said she “met such wonderful people and learnt some new skills”.
