Top 5 civic spaces of 2016
A good piece of civic architecture can transform the surrounding suburb, encourage connection with other citizens and add richness and meaning to our landscape. In 2016 we are lucky to have had several outstanding public projects, situated across New Zealand. Below are our top five most viewed civic projects on ArchitectureNow from the year.
1. Rore Kāhu, Bay of Islands by Cheshire Architects
Translated as ‘soaring hawk’, this minimal visitor centre features rammed earth walls and a light-as-a-feather roof. The sculptural project has a strong ecclesiastical quality while also celebrating the overall experience of the historical site, where the first missionary sermon in New Zealand took place. More…
2. Christchurch Bus Interchange/Whakawhitinga Pahi, Christchurch by Architectus
A visually striking bus station with a large folded roof form that has the scale of a larger transport interchange. Pedestrian safety and amenity is high on the agenda and the interior features a warm material palette of mainly timber and stone. Artworks by various Ngāi Tahu artists create a local connection. The façade features a sculptural relief by artist Carin Wilson that references Kiwi flora and fauna, as well as the people of Aotearoa. More…
4. Bishop Selwyn Chapel, Auckland by Fearon Hay Architects
The gleaming sweep of the gold-tiled roof is perhaps the most outstanding part of this stunning chapel, but the project also references the Pacific fale while creating a sense of movement and a strong presence. The structure is modern, transparent and highly welcoming – the definition of what church should be today. More…
5. ASB Waterfront Theatre, Auckland by Moller Architects and BVN Architecture
Situated in the quickly growing Wynyard Quarter, the frontage of this large theatre features clear glass that allows a peek into the sophisticated interior.
