Three big wins for a jungle tree house in Ligar Bay
Ligar Bay bach, described by architect Greg Young of Young Architects as “a modern jungle tree house”, has won three awards at the 2024 Regional Architectural Designers New Zealand (ADNZ) Resene Architectural Design Awards.
The project won the Nelson Marlborough Regional Award for New Home between 150m2 and 300m2, a Highly Commended Award for Home Interiors, and the Regional Award for Resene Colour in Design. The ADNZ judges were impressed with the elaborate elevation of the bach, positioned high above neighbouring homes.
Made up by two small pavilions nestled into the native bush and overlooking Ligar Bay, the bach is designed for occupants to relax and intergrate themselves with the local scenery. The owners were heavily involved in bringing the project to fruition, favouring the use of timber, contrasting concrete, and metal detailing.
“Its distinct modules create a hierarchy of spaces, each offering breathtaking sea views, ensuring every part of the home enjoys a unique connection to the surrounding landscape. A private retreat, featuring a bedroom and bathroom with a luxurious sunken bath, allows occupants to unwind while fully immersing themselves in the serene scenery. The thoughtful landscaping, highlighted by the path linking the two forms, enhances the home’s connection to its environment and promises to become even more integral over time as the vegetation matures and flourishes,” commented the judges.
The National ADNZ Resene Architectural Design Awards will be held in Rotorua on 1 November. All regional award winners are automatically eligible to win a National Award.
The full list winners will be announced on the ADNZ website, along with further updates on the awards.
