The winners of the 2014 AR Emerging Architecture Awards were announced in London on 26 November. The award recognises completed projects across a broad range of typologies from buildings to landscape and urban projects, interiors, temporary installations and furniture or products designs.

The award is a prestigious prize for young architects, providing world-wide recognition. Past winners include internationally celebrated architects Sou Fujimoto and Thomas Heatherwick as well as Australia’s own Sean Godsell among others.

Australian practice CHROFI was named a runner up in 2014 for Lune de Sang Sheds. Located on a hardwood plantation in the Byron Bay, the two bunker-like pavilions are substantial and solid counterpoints to the ephemeral nature of the plantation.

Lune de Sang Sheds was pipped at the post by Japanese project Boundary Window by Shingo Masuda+Katsuhisa Otsubo Architects. The project is a family holiday house converted from a block of three apartments, screened behind a “window” and curtains.

The other two runner ups were Equestrian Project by CC Arquitectos/Manuel Cervantes Cespedes (Mexico) and Long Museum West Bund by Atelier Deshaus (China).

Fellow Australian project Wintergarden Facade in Brisbane by Studio 505 was among seven projects that received high commendations at the awards. They included:

• Farming Kindergarten – Vo Trong Nghia Architects
• Former Fish Market - Metropolitan Design Centre – Paulo Gaston Flores Arquitecto
• School floating in the Sky – Kochi University of Technology
• Shichigahama Tohyama Nursery – Takahashi Ippei Office
• Structures on the Edge: Wind Tower – MSA-Gruff
• Void Temple – Rozana Montiel Architects

Judging the entries this year were: Will Alsop (aLL Design), Catherine Slessor (Editor, The Architectural Review), Tom De Moor (Robbrecht en Daem) and Li Xiaodong (Li Xiaodong Atelier).
