Antarctica New Zealand and The Certified Builders Association of New Zealand are offering a building apprentice a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to work live and work in Antarctica for three months.

The Apprent-ICE scholarship is designed to enhance awareness of New Zealand’s activities in Antarctica.

Antarctica New Zealand is seeking a leader who is passionate about complex construction and demonstrates strong health, safety and environmental values. The successful applicant will head south for the three-month summer construction season to work on the major reconfiguration of the Hillary Field Centre at Scott Base.

The $4 million project will be completed over the next two construction seasons and will lift the quality of science facilities on the base to international standards, enhancing the leadership role of New Zealand scientists on the ice.

Recognising the value of Antarctica and the Southern Ocean as a unique environment for scientific research, the programme aims to drive an interest in and understanding of science and logistics operation in Antarctica.

Applications for the scholarship programme are open until 16 November 2014. The winning apprentice will receive return flights to Antarctica, loan of extreme weather clothing kits, and all meals and accommodation at Scott Base. 

The opportunity is facilitated by Antarctica New Zealand, The Certified Builders Association of New Zealand, BCITO and ITAB.
