Space Studio has appointed David Sweatman and Monique Enoka-Davidson as directors, expanding the practice’s leadership and marking a new chapter for the studio.

David Sweatman has been part of the practice for over 16 years, bringing more than two decades of design experience in New Zealand and Australia. His work spans hotels, hospitality, residential, and commercial projects. Reflecting on his career, Sweatman pointed to the changing role of interior design in New Zealand: “When I first moved here from Australia, interior design wasn’t widely recognised as a serious design discipline. Things have progressed, and now we’re increasingly competing against firms I really admire, which feels like validation that our work is industry leading.”

Monique Enoka-Davidson, who joined the studio in 2017, brings more than 15 years of experience across resorts, hotels, and high-end residential projects in New Zealand and the Pacific. She highlights projects such as Gibbston Valley Lodge and Residences, Six Senses Fiji, and Te Arikinui Pullman as examples of the studio’s approach: “For me, design is about storytelling — capturing the essence of place, people and culture through considered detail and subtle gestures. Our ethos is centred on creating spaces that are authentic and enduring, rather than chasing trends.”

Looking to the future, Enoka-Davidson is focused on guiding the studio’s growth across Oceania and Asia, while maintaining its boutique scale and personalised approach. The studio’s focus is as forward-thinking as it is grounded. In a sector often defined by pace and competition, the trio’s combined leadership points toward a future defined by collaboration, innovation, and continuity.

Both new directors emphasise the importance of culture and collaboration at Space Studio. Sweatman says, “My focus is on ensuring all team members feel their contribution shapes the outcome of a project,” while Enoka-Davidson adds, “We draw inspiration from the whakataukī, he tangata, he tangata, he tangata — it is people, it is people, it is people.”

Noting that Space Studio’s evolution under shared leadership reflects the same values that have defined its design process for years, Sweatman continues, “We’re a studio built on relationships — within the team, with our clients, and with our collaborators.”

Founder and Director Vee Kessner said, “Their complementary leadership styles reflect the studio’s broader ambitions. David leans toward design strategy, studio and project management, while Monique brings a focus on design storytelling, innovation, and people-centred leadership. Together, they will continue shaping interiors that reflect both context and community.”
