Shortlist announced: 2020 New Zealand Architecture Awards
Te Kāhui Whaihanga New Zealand Institute of Architects has announced 45 projects as finalists in this year’s national architecture awards programme. The projects span the North and South Islands and represent just how wide-ranging meaningful architecture is in this country. New homes, historic refurbs, a bowling club, places for the public to gather and secluded sanctuaries all feature on this year’s shortlist.
The National Awards jury is comprised of convenor and Auckland architect Michael Thomson along with fellow architects Lynda Simmons, Fiona Short and Anthony Hoete, who will visit the shortlisted projects before selecting the winners.
Thomson said of the 22 shortlisted housing projects, “There has been a shortage of good-quality multi-unit housing in New Zealand, and it’s good to see this type of building getting the attention it needs from architects and their clients.”
“As you’d expect, there are multiple shortlisted projects from Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch,” he continued, “but the jury will also be going to see buildings in Whangarei, Gisborne, Tauranga, Hastings, Whanganui, Nelson, Tekapō and Queenstown.” All of the NZIA’s eight local branches are represented in this year’s finalists.
“Some of these buildings are by younger architects, and it’s great to see new practices taking their place alongside established firms in the New Zealand Architecture Awards programme,” Thomson concludes.
