This year’s WORD Festival in Ōtautahi Christchurch will feature a special event presented by Te Kāhui Whaihanga New Zealand Institute of Architects Canterbury Branch and Freerange Press, where five speakers will talk about one of their favourite post-quake buildings and imagine another.

Taking the book Shifting Foundations: Postquake Architecture of Ōtautahi Christchurch as a starting point, Erik Kennedy, James Tempero, Jessica Halliday, Joseph Hullen and Sally Blundell will share their responses to a building they hold dear. Then, they will turn to what’s missing and sketch out a longed-for space, creating an alternative cityscape.

First the building makes the storyteller, then the storyteller makes the building. Finally, the audience votes for their favourite building, real or imagined.

Hosted by Ōtautahi-based comedian and writer Ray Shipley, the event will be held on Saturday 26 August, 6–7pm, and tickets can be bought here.
