Winners of the international Restaurant & Bar Design Awards were announced on 25 September in London, with top honours going to a French restaurant and a Chinese bar.

A Strasbourg, France project, Les Haras, was named the best overall restaurant, thanks to its contemporary twist on a traditional rural brasserie. Designed by Jouin Manku, the large open space features wood, leather and metal with a decorative spiral staircase acting as a centrepiece.

A concentric circular structure was also the focal point at W Hotel’s FEI in Guangxhou, China, which was named the best overall bar. The space, designed by Japanese studio A.N.D., uses brass, marble, polished wood, parquet flooring and backlit LED wall lights, which together create a luxurious design aesthetic. 

In the Australia and Pacific category, Howler, designed by Splinter Society Architecture in Melbourne, Australia, was named the best bar and Adelaide’s Penfolds Magill Estate Restaurant by Pascale Gomes-Mcnabb Design was named best restaurant. Wellington’s The Crab Shack, owned by Simon Gault and designed by HBO+EMTB, was one of eight finalists in the category. 

The awards programme, now in its sixth year, is the only competition in the world dedicated to the design of food and beverage spaces. There were 29 category winners, selected from 840 entries from more than 60 countries.
