Redefining simple luxuries
Situated in the natural landscape of Twizel in Te Manahuna Mackenzie Basin, this home is described by the design and build team as “a modern architectural bach”.
A collaborative effort between architectural designers Detail Consultancy, builders Dimension Building, landscape architects Kamo Marsh, kitchen, lighting and interiors specialists Lume Design and client Simon Slade, the team refers to this bach as “Mackenzie Magic”.
Lead architectural designer Jeff Mason says the client was looking for the fundamentals a family bach requires with a focus on functionality. An additional request, to address the home’s suburban corner-site, was to use raw materials and rustic textures that connected to Twizel’s rural vernacular.
“Although our first thoughts were to use a timber cladding, we chose to use the recycled Nu-Wall aluminium vertical weatherboard cladding system, to allow for low-maintenance while the bach was not in use between seasons” says Mason. “This worked well with the Dimond Solar-Rib roofing profile, giving the project a modern feel but with the traditional gable roof lines.”
The deep-bronze-toned aluminium façade helps to ground the building into the landscape while providing a backdrop to the alpine-themed plantings in the rocky beds of chalky stone. Strategically-placed glass panels invite natural light into the interior and create a visual connection between indoor and outdoor spaces. “The angular roofing adds an element of sophistication but also reflects the rugged terrain of the region, echoing the mountain ranges visible from the property,” Mason explains.
For the architectural designer, design is always a collaborative process with the client. In this case, Slade brought some unique requirements to the design brief, which prompted in-depth consultation. “The sharing of ideas via 3D modelling and video software meant the analysis and fine-tuning of the design could be streamlined,” Slade says. “Our collaboration has achieved a beautiful, contemporary home with subtle, nature-inspired elements that enhance its connection to the natural surroundings.”
Creating a connection to its natural setting was also a key driver for the interiors team. Designer Brooke Hulston says when designing the home, their intention was to blend in seamlessly into the rugged beauty of the surrounding landscape. “This translated throughout the interiors with the use of warm timber joinery elements, travertine-look tiles and textured fabrics.”
The interior features a palette of neutral and earthy tones, rich wooden textures and sleek modern finishes. The generous open-plan living area at the heart of the home boasts a high vaulted ceiling and minimalist yet cosy decor, to encourage relaxation and social interaction. Large sliding doors open to an outdoor patio for alfresco dining and evening gatherings beside an outdoor fireplace.
Slade describes the kitchen as “a food lover’s dream”, equipped with the latest appliances, a large central island and bespoke cabinetry, blending function with aesthetics. Alongside the kitchen, the dining area is positioned to take advantage of the views.
The three bedrooms provide private, serene spaces for retreat, for both family and guests, with bathrooms featuring clean lines, European fixtures and elegant stone.
Mason says the home has been designed to integrate well with its outdoor living spaces – expansive decking, a cedar hot tub and thoughtfully designed landscaped gardens.
Mackenzie Magic’s blend of modern living, tribute to its iconic setting and a fresh take on a traditional vernacular has created a home that ticks all the client’s boxes for a classic Kiwi bach, only updated.
