Master Builders House of the Year (Bay of Plenty region) announced
A trifecta for Belco Homes who took out the top three awards for three different homes.
A stunning home built by Belco Homes in Bethlehem has taken out the Supreme House of the Year Over $1 million award at the 2023 Bay of Plenty and Central Plateau Registered Master Builders House of the Year competition. The judges were captivated by the remarkable use of locally sourced Hinuera stone which was skilfully paired with ironbark hardwood lintels and expressive structural timbers — resulting in a visually stunning architectural marvel. They entry also won the Resene New Home $2 million–$4 million category, Pink Batts Craftsmanship Award, Kitchen Excellence Award, and a Gold Award.
Another beautiful home by Belco Homes built in Omokoroa was awarded the Bay of Plenty and Central Plateau Supreme House of the Year Under $1 million award. Maximising every inch of this compact site, the judges applauded the exceptional talent of the designer and builder in developing this outstanding home. This home also took out the Altus Window Systems New Home $750,000–$1 million category, and a Gold Award.
In a third major win, Belco Homes also took out the Bay of Plenty and Central Plateau Supreme Renovation of the Year for a home in Wahi Beach. This remarkable entry not only met, but surpassed the high expectations and challenges set by the client. The builder embraced the opportunity to create an outstanding home, showcasing their expertise in working with a wide range of materials. This entry was also awarded the Renovation Over $1.5 million category, and a Gold Award.
The Registered Master Builders House of the Year competition recognises the very best homes, builders, and craftspeople across New Zealand. This year the regional competition had almost 300 entries across 9 regions.

Beck Building, Winner of the Bunnings Renovation $750,000 - $1.5 million category, Special Award, and a Gold Award, for a home in Waipahihi, Taupō
Judges comment: “The judges were impressed with the renovation, acknowledging the meticulous effort made to preserve the original building fabric wherever feasible. Beck Building has effectively revived an architectural gem crafted by one of Aotearoa’s beloved architects, John Scott.
The judges applauded the builder’s determination in successfully harmonising new construction with the existing structure, recognising the complexity of such a task. The building team’s efforts have breathed new life into the house, ensuring its continued legacy for future generations to appreciate.”

Its distinctive features, including a curving timber-clad wall that effortlessly guides visitors to the front door, unveils a stunning open-plan living area. The well-appointed kitchen overlooks an inviting internal courtyard and a spacious outdoor living room, complete with a cosy fireplace.
Staying true to the essence of pavilion houses, the bedrooms elegantly stretch along one side, with the main suite boasting a remarkable ensuite bathroom. The judges commend this build by The Thorne Group B.O.P. for its refreshing uniqueness and outstanding craftsmanship, making it a truly exceptional choice for discerning homebuyers.”
Gudsell Designer Homes, Winner of the New Home $1.5 million - $2 million category, Outdoor Living Excellence Award, Gerrand Flooring Lifestyle Award, and a Gold Award, for a home in Matua, Tauranga

The attention to detail, the seamless integration of the design with the surrounding landscape, and the overall quality of the construction are all exemplary. Penny Homes, Winner of the New Home $500,000 - $750,000 category, and a Gold Award, for a home in Acacia Bay, Taupō
Judges comment: “The craftsmanship exhibited in this house is superb. The parallel pavilions, with their pristine white roofs and elegant natural timber cladding, create a striking visual appeal. Upon entering the beautifully crafted living room, the abundant natural light pouring in through the prominent north-facing window in the ceiling immediately catches the eye. This feature not only enhances the aesthetics but also creates a warm and welcoming atmosphere within.
The judges were thoroughly impressed with the consistently high level of workmanship displayed throughout the construction. Congratulations to the Penny Homes team behind this outstanding creation.”
Landmark Homes Taupō, Winner of the Master Build 10 Year Guarantee Multi Unit (Apartments/Duplexes/Terrace Housing) category, and a Gold Award, for a home in Wharewaka, Taupō
Judges comment: “Located on the edge of Lake Taupō, this duplex is part of a six-unit development designed as resort-style holiday accommodation. The spacious three-bedroom units provide many options for the owners, from permanent residences to holiday homes and holiday rentals. Designed to be low-maintenance, the duplex features painted brickwork and vertical shiplap boarding with the chosen colour palette enhancing the architectural design.
The first-floor living areas open out onto the covered balcony area, providing wonderful space for entertaining or relaxing while taking in the view. These units are future-proofed with internal lifts, while the double garage has room for outdoor and water toys.”
Stroud Homes Bay of Plenty, Winner of the Volume/Group Housing New Home up to $500,000 category, and a Gold Award, for a home in Te Puna, Tauranga
Judges comment: “Despite a generous clearing of land, the building site still faced its challenges. Limited to a ledge midway down a steep bank, the bank above demanded serious retaining. The cost of which was necessary but ate into the modest budget right from the start.
However, the judges were thoroughly impressed with the final result – an impeccably executed and neatly finished home. The raking ceilings in the living spaces gave the simple planform building a real lift, elevating the overall design. Stroud Homes Bay of Plenty deserves a hearty congratulations for delivering a comfortable and inviting home within the constraints of a modest budget.”
Kuriger Builders Tauranga, Winner of the Renovation up to $750,000 category, and a Gold Award, for a home in Otūmoetai, Tauranga
