Two diverse projects have won awards at the 2016 World Architecture Festival awards, which was held in Berlin this year.

Isthmus received the World Landscape of the Year 2016 award for their Kopupaka Reserve project. The Auckland wetlands reserve features “woven” timber structures that provide reed-bed filters, a skatepark and planting areas.

The jury said, “Inspired by woven baskets for catching eel, Isthmus has developed an innovative river-wall system of interlocking timbers. Simple yet sophisticated engineering allows the baskets to retain silt and create habitats which will shift and change over time.”

The celebrated bright pink #LightpathAKL cycleway has taken out the Completed Buildings Transport category. Designed by Monk McKenzie Architects and LandLab, #LightpathAKL has already picked up several national awards.

The Canada Street Bridge, part of the LightPath cycleway, also won a prestigious American architectural award, the Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Architecture and Design Award, in July this year.

More than 300 projects from 58 countries were shortlisted for the awards. Among them were 10 New Zealand projects from 8 practices. See the full list of World Architecture Festival winners here.

The 2016 World Architecture Festival is colocated with the 2016 Inside World Festival of Interiors. See the full list of winners from the 2016 Inside Awards here.
