Kitchen designer Mal Corboy’s kitchen in a Hekarua Bay house on Waiheke Island, which sits at the top of a cliff-face, has been awarded catergory winner of the Society of British International Design (SBID) Awards’ kitchen, bedroom and bathroom category.
The kitchen was praised for its three-fold functionality and its attention to detail. The project includes a kitchen, a scullery, and a temperature-controlled wine cellar finished with zebrano timber, white Corian, glass and stainless steel. Central to the space is the island with wave-like, flared sides inversely reflecting the curve in the bulkhead above, and washed with LED lights at night in the client’s choice of colour and strength.
Winners of the fourth annual SBID Awards were announced on 14 November at The Dorchester hotel in London, England. The SBID Awards recognise design excellence across 15 categories including hotel design, retail design, hospitality design and entertainment space design. This year, entries were received from more than 30 countries.
“I feel this win is not only for myself, but for the design community in general, showing the world that designers in New Zealand and Australia have a lot to offer, we can push the boundaries of design,” designer Mal Corboy said.
