The translucent, backlit, undulating ceiling of the installation guided visitors through the infinite space
Mirrored walls reflected filtered light throughout the space.
The container acted as a transitional space from the street to the event area.
A humble shipping container became an illuminated gateway to the 2014 Light Nelson event, held on 11-13 July.
Designed by a group of architectural graduates from the Nelson region, the pre-fabricated 20-foot container came to life during the evenings, serving as a transitional space from the street into the event space at Albion Square.
Open at both ends, visitors were able to walk through the container lined with mirrored walls and filtered light, project leader Nick Burn says.
“Overhead the translucent, backlit, undulating ceiling, which acted as an inverted version of the hills surrounding Nelson City, guided visitors through the infinite space,” Burn says.
The group of seven architectural graduates from JTB Architects, Mathew Hay Architecture, Redbox Architecture and Irving Smith Jack Architects were commissioned by the Light Nelson trust to create the installation.
