Interior Awards jury 2019: Meet Dave Strachan
Architect Dave Strachan is one of five members on the 2019 Interior Awards judging panel.
SGA Studio and Workshop by Strachan Group Architects won the Interior Awards 2017 Workplace up to 1000m2 category.
Industry-leading designers, makers, architects, critics and teachers comprise this year’s Interior Awards jury. We asked them some of your burning questions. Today, we hear from Dave Strachan, registered architect and director at Strachan Group Architects (SGA) in Kingsland, Auckland.
What is your favourite New Zealand commercial interior and why do you think it works well?
Dave Strachan (DS): That’s easy. I’m pretty biased: our SGA studio and workshop! I’ve been coming here nearly every day for over two years, and it’s a great place for our work family with just the right balance between functionality, action and tranquillity.
What would be your one key piece of advice to those thinking of entering the Interior Awards 2019?
DS: Just have a go. If you think it’s good, submit your entry, because you’ll never know if you don’t have a crack.
What is your favourite interiors/architecture related book?
DS: I’ve been given this great book on the history of plywood, which is such an adaptable material and uses timber very efficiently. It’s called Plywood: A Material Story by Christopher Wilk.
What music are you likely to be listening to while selecting the finalists to the Interior Awards?
DS: Anything by Jason Isbell. He’s a great songwriter and an amazing guitar player.
Is there anything you think is under-represented in New Zealand interiors and you wish there was more of?
DS: We don’t see enough timber with all its variety, grain, smell and texture, sadly, because it costs more than standard lining materials.
