This family house has a supple plan that generates, around a central courtyard, a surprising array of enjoyable spaces, first published in 2012.
A long, screened street elevation that makes outsized and playful reference to gabled neighbours provides shelter and privacy, and allows for the admission of light into living areas. While the design anticipates a relaxed and sociable occupation, the contained, galley-like kitchen indicates a departure from contemporary open-plan orthodoxy. The house might be straight and narrow, but it’s also refreshingly unconventional. NZIA citation.
