Green homes celebrated with Superhome Awards

Rob d’Auvergne from Foley Group Architecture was the winner of Superhome of the Year 2024 for his own family home on the Port Hills of Ōtautahi Christchurch.
Super Reno of the Year: 124a Seaview Road, Piha, by Sang Architects.
Builder’s Own Superhome Award: 75 Aynsley Terrace, Hillsborough, Christchurch, by Character Builders.
Highly Commended: 5 Caro Lane, Cashmere, Christchurch, by Dan Saunders Construction.
Highly Commended: 14 Ryan Place, Tai Tapu, by Admire Concrete Homes.
Highly Commended: 90 River Drive, Kerikeri, by Solarei Architecture.
The Superhome Of The Year Awards sponsored by GIB, celebrated the best Superhomes in New Zealand from the past year. The event emphasised building better, climate-positive, and healthier homes. Criteria for evaluation included technical performance, design aesthetics, site responsiveness, innovation in design methods and features promoting occupants’ wellbeing.
The winner of the Superhome Of The Year Awards 2024 was Rob d’Auvergne from Foley Group Architecture for the design of his own family home, located on the Port Hills of Christchurch in Cashmere. The hill-site home effortlessly combines practicality with style, responsible yet interesting with beautifully lit and well-proportioned spaces — a clear demonstration of a well-balanced, holistic design.
Darryl Sang from Sang Architects in Auckland won the SuperReno Of The Year 2024 for renovating a Piha home to become New Zealand’s first ‘EnerPhit’ Passive House Certified renovation.
The awards ceremony took place at a newly completed Superhome in Hillsborough, Christchurch, by Guy Gillespie from Character Builders. The home received its official Superhome Certification and a Highly Commended Award. Costing under $500,000, this affordable 3-bedroom home with a double-height living room was open to the Awards attendees to explore, allowing a preview of this home before the upcoming winter Superhome Tour coming July 20th 2024 — the perfect opportunity for networking and sharing of ideas.
Other Highly Commended Award winners for 2024 were:
- Dan Saunders from Dan Saunders Construction for the super spec home in Cashmere Estate, Christchurch.
- Stephen and Juanita Clearwater from Admire Concrete Homes for the concrete home in Tai Tapu.
- Duncan Firth from Solarei Architecture for the passive solar design house in Kerikeri.
The Superhome Of The Year Awards recognises homes that prioritise sustainable design and the occupants’ health and well-being. By seamlessly integrating beautiful design with high-performance sustainability credentials, these homes strike a balance often lacking in typical housing. A Superhome optimises both aspects, creating an ideal living space that fosters a positive atmosphere for residents while also benefiting the planet.
