Federal Street to get a face-lift
Five top architecture firms, including New Zealand's own Warren and Mahoney, will compete to create the design for a new building at the heart of Auckland's Federal Street.
Melbourne-based property developers ICD have acquired a site on Federal Street that is currently being used as a seven-storey car park. ICD has invited five of the best architecture and design firms from around the world to design a new hotel and apartment building on the site and to make their mark on Auckland’s skyline.
New Zealand firm Warren and Mahoney, along with Zaha Hadid, Woods Bagot, Cox Architecture and Elenberg Fraser, will create two versions of the new building’s design. One design will work within Auckland Council’s current framework for city planning and the other will challenge the Unitary Plan. Both designs should offer unrivalled quality of design, amenities and curb appeal.
ICD has recently been involved with large-scale projects like the Eq. Tower in Melbourne and this will be their first development in New Zealand. The company notes that the design brief for the Federal Street project includes respecting the “fabric of Auckland”, the physical landscape and the cultural heritage of the city.
ICD deputy managing director Matthew Khoo says, “Key for Federal Street is a design that enhances the Auckland sky line, but the building will also need to be a key part of the upgrade and refreshing of Federal Street and the surrounding streets and laneways.”
The final designs are set to be finished in mid-August with the winner being announced in early September.
