Architecture Week 2016’s theme is ‘Housing the Future’, and it’s certainly true that housing – whether it’s the lack of, affordability, quality or type – is the word on everyone’s lips. As prospects for affordable home ownership diminish for many, difficult conversations are needed about how we design and build, the nature of our cities and how we live in them.
Architecture Week is an initiative of the New Zealand Institute of Architects (NZIA) working in collaboration with a number of other organisations interested in improving the quality of our towns and cities. It took place across Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch from 19 to 25 September.
Auckland Architecture Week was organised by architectural members of NZIA Auckland branch including: Lindley Naismith, Michael Thomson, Jo Aitken, Fritha Hobbs, Sam Boanas, Sianne Smith and Bobby Shen, in partnership with local institutions and practices.
Architecture Week in Wellington was organised by a number of organisations, including NAWIC, PrefabNZ, NZIA Wellington Branch, Architecture + Women, ADNZ, The Architectural Centre and many other practices and volunteers.
The Christchurch Architecture Week was organised by Tim Nees, with help from Mike Callaghan, Maria Chen, Chloe Coles, David Sheppard, David Smith, Colin Corsbie and Julian O’Sullivan, alongside local practices.
