The University of Auckland has honoured long-serving heritage architect Jeremy Salmond with a Distinguished Alumni award for his contribution to conservation and architecture in New Zealand.

Salmond is an NZIA Gold Medal winner, and he was also awarded the Queens Service Order in 2007 for his work. He is a founding director at Auckland-based firm Salmond Reed Architects, which has played a part in conserving and restoring some of the country’s most iconic buildings such as Auckland’s St Matthew-in-the-City and Wellington’s Sacred Heart Cathedral. He is currently the heritage architect for the reinstatement of the Christ Church Cathedral and the heritage advisor for the Auckland City Rail Link.

“I’m genuinely thrilled to be the recipient of the Distinguished Alumni award,” says Salmond. “I work in a field which brings many rewards, as well as challenges, and I reflect that I am one of many in my profession who seek to care for the rich legacy of our built heritage. I know we have made a difference in doing so and I accept the award as an acknowledgement of the importance of this work to our cultural heritage and to the quality of community life in this country.”

The University of Auckland awards three Distinguished Alumni and one Young Alumnus each year. Salmond along with the other three award recipients, which include Pacific poet and author Courtney Sina Meredith, Chief Justice Dame Helen Winkelmann and global business consultant Andrew Grant, will take part in a panel discussion at the University’s Bright Lights event on 19 March 2020.
