A BIG name for in:situ 2024
In:situ, draws internationally acclaimed architects to our shores to be part of the biannual event — last year's conference attracting record numbers. With the announcement of Kai-Uwe Bergmann hitting the stage for 2024's offering, we expect even bigger crowds to gather to hear insights from the architect.
Kai-Uwe Bergmann, FAIA, is a New York-based partner with Bjarke Ingels Group (a.ka. BIG). The company was founded by Bjarke Ingels nearly two decades ago and now has a force of 700 staff working across architecture, landscaping, engineering, planning and product design.
Bergmann oversees BIG’s urban and landscape projects in North America, Europe, Asia and the Middle East, and has contributed to BIG U, the resiliency plan to protect 16 kilometres of Manhattan coastline. In addition, Bergmann heads up BIG’s business development which currently has the office working in over 35 different countries. Some well-know projects from the architect include Brooklyn Queens Park, Smithsonian Master Plan, Pittsburgh Master Plan and Miami Beach Square.
The scope of Bergmann’s work beyond BIG has included teaching assignments at the University of Pennsylvania, IE University in Madrid, and his alma mater the University of Virginia. He has held a Board position with the Van Alen Institute, a New York non-profit dedicated to improving design in the public realm, and he participates as a juror on international panels and lectures globally on BIG’s projects.
Kai-Uwe has been announced as an international keynote speaker at in:situ on Wednesday 21 February 2024. Tickets on sale Monday 2 October 2023 on Te Kahui Whaihanga’s website.
