Congratulations to this year’s Supreme and Retail Award winner — Marisfrolg Fashion’s Exhibition Gallery by Architecture Van Brandenburg.

The jury’s comment:

“This monumental project threw out the rule book and draped itself across the space with whimsical, sculptural and textural artistry. As if from another planet, the organic design cleverly gives you just enough to ground you back on earth, as you move through a catacombs-like space of repeating vaulted arches and cloisters. Garments are celebrated and displayed as art, set within a collection of materiality and surfaces that use recycled ceramic, brick and stone to celebrate the past while looking to the future.

An outstanding example of response to brief, expression of form making, attention to detail and collaboration with craftspeople, this intriguing and somewhat unprecedented interior challenged the judges to confront their own values as designers in the current global climate and to question the very fundamentals of what is good design.”

PROJECT DETAILS:

Location: Longhua, Shenzhen, China

Client: Ms Zhu Chongyun and Mr Yao Jianhua

Building area (m2): 980m2

Project brief: The project brief was twofold: to energise Marisfrolg’s VIP clients, employees and visitors through inspiring architecture and design and to showcase three decades of Marisfrolg Apparel. The vision was for the interior to serve as a platform for the brand’s evolution and a space that embodies innovation, creativity, art and texture. The interior architecture and design was to reflect the company, to be a source of timeless inspiration and to encourage visitors to think outside the box while delving into the details of the garments and the space itself. Ultimately, the client envisaged a narrative that captures the essence of Marisfrolg’s sophisticated, forward-thinking commitment to excellence.

“The material vision aimed to evoke sophistication and timelessness while prioritising sustainability. The goal was to create a space that transcends trends and embodies enduring elegance. To achieve this, reclaimed, recycled bricks and discarded ceramics sourced from local factories were selected and crafted to create a composition between the clean precise white plaster and the texture of the vaulted brickwork and mosaic surfaces reference materials, patterns and structures found in Marisfrolg garments.” - Damien Van Brandenburg.
