2020 in Review: Top 5 people
As we round out one of the most unusual years on the books, we’re looking back at ArchitectureNow‘s most popular articles in 2020: starting with five faces we loved reading about.
1. Architects in Profile: Fearon Hay
This duo is behind some of the country’s most iconic homes, so it is no surprise to find them on our list of top profiles this year. Here, they tell us about working together for over two decades, creating for clients from Lisbon to LA to right here in Aotearoa, their ideal client and more. Plus, take a look at some of their best New Zealand homes.
2. On the Rise: Elyjana Roach
Our On the Rise series with Resene highlights young and emerging designers from around the country who are making their mark on their industry. One of the most read this year was Elyjana Roach, a Wellington graduate whose Samoan heritage and passion for her home community of Porirua drives her to use architecture to give back. She tells us about designing practical architectural solutions for the people of Porirua, starting a Masters of Architecture and Urban Design at Harvard in the middle of a pandemic and more.
3. On the Rise: Justin Crook
Another promising emerging designer was one of our top stories this year: graphic designer at Warren and Mahoney’s Auckland studio Justin Crook. Justin caught up with ArchitectureNow editor Ashley Cusick during New Zealand’s first Level 4 lockdown and created his Resene mood board entirely digitally using the Resene online Swatch Library. He talks about the merging of 2D and 3D, creating a strong brand as an architecture firm and more.
4. On the Rise: Campbell McNeill
In the first On the Rise of 2020, we caught up with a Dunedin native with experience ranging from grassroots projects to multinational firms. He chats about starting an architecture firm, creating a collective with his classmates, the future of design in Dunedin and much more. In his mood board, he explores colour beyond the ever-popular Resene Black White.
5. Love and basketball: Michael Vaisigano
This former professional basketball player found love in architecture after studying the works of John Scott. He now works for Ignite Architects’ Wellington Studio and sits on the board of the Trust for the Futuna Chapel, which looks after one of Scott’s great works. Vaisigano tells us about his journey in design and how he hopes to inspire other Pasifika kids to get involved in the profession.
